2026 Section 179 Planning for Chevrolet and GMC Business Buyers

Published on Nov 7, 2026 by Seth Wadley Chevrolet GMC of Pauls Valley

A truck that helps your business earn revenue may also qualify for depreciation deductions. For tax years beginning in 2026, IRS Publication 946 lists a maximum Section 179 deduction of $2,560,000, reduced when qualifying property placed in service exceeds $4,090,000. These are business-wide limits, not a promised write-off for one truck.

Start with the business purpose

Tell your tax professional how the vehicle will be used, who will own it, and when it will be ready for its intended work. Section 179 generally requires more than 50% business use, and the deductible business portion is subject to additional rules, including a business-income limit. Personal use is not converted into business use simply by buying through a company.

Identify the actual vehicle

A Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, and commercial chassis can receive different treatment. Provide the VIN, manufacturer weight rating, seating arrangement, cargo dimensions, and purchase documents. Certain heavy SUVs have a separate Section 179 cap. Qualifying bonus depreciation is a different provision and should be evaluated separately.

Build the buying plan together

Seth Wadley Chevrolet GMC can provide vehicle specifications, an itemized quote, and expected delivery information. Your tax professional can determine eligibility, elections, and the treatment of rebates, trade-ins, and added equipment. Buy for a business need that makes financial sense before considering a deduction. A deduction reduces taxable income; it does not reimburse the vehicle's entire purchase price.

Does buying a business truck automatically qualify me for Section 179?

No. Your adviser must review the actual purchase, vehicle classification, business use, service date and applicable limits. Provide the VIN, manufacturer weight rating, cargo and seating configuration, invoices and intended use. A company purchase alone does not make personal use deductible, and a deduction reduces taxable income rather than paying the vehicle's purchase price.
