A December Deposit Is Not the Same as Placing a Work Truck in Service

Published on Nov 7, 2026 by Seth Wadley Chevrolet GMC of Pauls Valley

For a business planning a year-end Chevrolet or GMC purchase, delivery timing matters beyond the sale date. The IRS generally treats property as placed in service when it is ready and available for its specific intended use. Paying a deposit, signing an order, or arranging financing alone does not establish that the completed truck is ready for work.

Plan backward from the job

If you need a service body, tool storage, a flatbed, or other equipment, discuss the full installation schedule early. Ask when the chassis can arrive, when the installer can work, and what final inspections or setup remain. A truck awaiting essential equipment can have a different service date from a finished truck ready for its intended task.

Keep dated evidence

Retain the purchase agreement, delivery confirmation, installation invoices, and records showing when the completed vehicle became operational. Tell your tax professional about any delays or changes in the intended use. Your business tax year may also differ from the calendar year, so confirm the relevant deadline.

Leave room for a practical decision

Seth Wadley Chevrolet GMC can help compare vehicles and coordinate available delivery information. Ask your adviser to evaluate the actual facts before counting a deduction in a tax projection. An earlier planning conversation gives you more choices and reduces the pressure to purchase equipment that does not fit your business simply to meet a date.

Does paying a deposit before year-end establish a truck's service date?

No. A deposit, order or financing agreement alone does not show that the completed truck is ready and available for its intended work. Essential installation can affect the timing. Keep delivery and upfit records, confirm your business's relevant tax-year deadline, and have your adviser review when the vehicle actually became operational for the specific task.
